important informationAre you aware that when you register a domain name, the registration details are made available to anyone who searches a public database online? It’s called the WHOIS database. The information stored could include personal information i.e. your name, address, email and phone number if you are not protected. Some spammers extract this database for email addresses. It may even be used by scammers looking to hijack your domain name from you.

What is WHOIS?

WHOIS is a public database which contains contact and registration information for every domain registered. It allows you to find out information about a specific domain name and is a useful way to check whether a domain name has been registered (this the method the our domain checker uses). You can find out who registered it, who the registrar is, contact information (name, address, phone number and email address), domain creation and expiration dates along with other listed information.

How does the WHOIS database work?

When you register a domain name, the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) requires your domain name registrar to submit your personal contact information to the WHOIS database. Once your listing is made available in this online directory, it is available to anyone who chooses to check domain names using the WHOIS search tool.

As an accredited domain names registrar, KIX Hosting must comply with the WHOIS database regulations set forth by ICANN. However, KIX Hosting offers a privacy option for the WHOIS database listing to ensure that customers feel comfortable with the visibility of their personal information.

The WHOIS database contains contact and registration information for every domain registered with a registrar. WHOIS databases are maintained by individual registrars; not by the central registry. This means that they are not always fully up-to-date. Most databases are updated every 24 hours.

When you register a domain name with us, we are required to pass on the contact details to the WHOIS. The information will then be publicly available through WHOIS services. For most domain types this is a mandatory requirement.

How can I protect my privacy online?

You might not want your personal contact details to be accessible to anyone who searches the Whois database. We understand. That’s why Kix Hosting provides ID Protection to protect your information from the public. ID Protection replaces your contact information with generic information from our privacy service, so your personal or business information does not go public. For only $9.99 a year, it is very affordable, and the domain is still owned by you.
